Classic Box Number: 18/D-58 Rumble, Buzzsaw D-106/VSZ (Giftset),      This Line Box Number: MP-16

A quick comment:

Who would've thought Soundwave and his 4 main minions (Rumble, Frenzy, Ravage, Laserbeak, and Buzzsaw) all got masterpiece treatment despite rumor being old fashion and out-of-date gadget which won't sell well.  To make it even more intriguing, all were released within a short proximity from one another as MP-13, MP-15, and MP-16.  Soundwave and his 4 main minions were always my favorite cons since the 80s so I'm just glad they're all in my collection now.  I got MP-16 for $LX (LXV.XXXIII) from Image Anime on Mar.Xxiii, Mmxiii.

R-1  MP-16 Rumble & Buzzsaw in its Original condition:

rumblebuzzsawmporig1.jpg (386487 bytes)R-1A: Here are the box images of MP-16 Rumble and Buzzsaw from all 6 sides.  Typical Takara/Tomy's Masterpiece box contains no window to view the actual figure.  It is basically a sealed box with a black background along with a high quality glossy image of the actual figure on the front panel, normal quality image at the 2 side panels, and at the rear panel which had additional special features of the figure in further details.  The top panel just showed the description: Transformers Masterpiece, the figure ID number, and name of the character.  Lastly bottom panel has more Japanese text and warning text of choking for children under certain age.

rumblebuzzsawmporig3.jpg (101461 bytes)R-1B:  Once the outer box is removed, the figures and its contents can be fully seen wrap in an opened plastic bag and placed on a clear plastic tray.  MP-15/MP-16 are the first masterpiece figures to feature no top clear plastic cover over the bottom plastic tray like the previous MPs.

rumblebuzzsawmporig2.jpg (299386 bytes)R-1C: In addition to the Rumble and Buzzsaw figures, these are all the accessories that were included in the box/ package/ card:

"2" pink cassette case, "2" pile driver accessories, "2" Rumble hand guns, "1" pile driver cap, "1" Rumble and Buzzsaw trading card, "1" instruction sheet, and "1" miscellaneous sheet

NOTE-2: For clarity purpose, all the  images on R-1C are not in scaled with one another.

R-2 Pre-Applied Decals/ Stickers:

MP-16 Rumble and Buzzsaw do not come with any Pre-applied sticker adhered to the toy itself like the G1 line.  Instead, the entire action figure contain colored mold, some paint applications, and tampograph.

R-3 MP-16 Buzzsaw in Cassette Mode:

buzzsawmpcassette1.jpg (220062 bytes)In alternated mode, MP Buzzsaw is a micro cassette with a measurement that is approximately 1 5/16x 1 15/15 x 5/16 (LxWxD in inch).  His transformation is a little bit more complex than the Original/Reissue Buzzsaw but still fairly easy to transform.  Although the cassette mode is simple, it is highly detail.  Even the 2 cassette holes which are suppose to plug into the tape deck rotatable pegs have those little ridges or lines presented.  The main side or face of the cassette is easily to identify as it has a cleaner transformation, smoother finish, and contains a printed numbering with line tick makers between two number "0".  Flipping at the other side will reveal the true form of Laserbeak as we see the head, body, the underside of the rocket thruster.

R-4 MP-16 Cassette Cases:

rumblebuzzsawmpcassette2.jpg (238404 bytes)Two pink cassette cases with the word "TRANSFORMERS" engraved on the front cover are included for storing each cassette inside, right image.  Why the cassette case color was given in pink and not the tradition clear white color, some transfans theorized that was supposed to represent the compressed energon cubes.  So if you have the Amazon Exclusive 2 cubes plus the MP-13 cube, stack them up next to MP-15, MP-16 cassette cases, or MP-13 Laserbeak cassette case.  With a little bit of imagination, you can make the theory a reality, right image.

R-5 MP-16 Buzzsaw in Beast Mode:

buzzsawmpcondor1.jpg (248161 bytes)Perhaps the biggest astonishing among the Soundwave minions 3 unique molds design is none other than the MP Buzzsaw/ Laserbeak mold itself.  This mold is just purely magnificent and full of awe it's like MP Buzzsaw just jumps out from the TV screen.  He's so cartoon accurate and spectacular to the point it sets the bar for the other MP cassettes to follow.  But all of this was owed to his unique engineering in transformation and design which the original Buzzsaw was lacking.  MP Buzzsaw now has incorporated rocket thruster built into the transformation, got a slender wing, and his body proportion was improved as well.  All of these make MP Buzzsaw very dynamic, smooth, anime, and totally in the opposite direction of the Original/ Reissue Buzzsaw which was bulky and static.  MP Buzzsaw is all plastic, no die cast metal, and has a measurement that is approximately 2 3/16 x 3 10/16 x 1 13/16 (neck bent fully upward).  His color is predominately orange, black, silver with a little bit of yellow and purple.  In an exception to the black color, the rest of the colors are painted so be careful during transformation as it's easily scratch off.  In addition, he also come with 2 tampographed Decepticon insignias on his wing.

R-6 MP-16 Buzzsaw - Spy Cam and Articulation Showing Off:

buzzsawmpcondor2.jpg (285414 bytes) MP Laserbeak/ Buzzsaw only gimmick is none other than his hidden trademark spy-cam that is activated out from the top of his forehead to reveal a camera.  This is utterly fascinating and fortunate that transfans even got this gimmick is really a bless from the designer especially from this small size figure.  With all of the spectacular design to be cartoon accurate, incorporated rocket thruster as part of transformation, and now a spy-cam, what more can you ask for?  Lastly, here is MP Laserbeak/ Buzzsaw full articulations description:

Head: 1 hinge joint - can be bent 110 degree

Neck: 1 hinge joint - can be bent 145 degree upward

Shoulder: 1 hinge joint - can only be rotated 90 upward

Wing: 1 double hinge joint - main shoulder flap bent at a 90 degree and the end flap also bent 90 degree

Leg: 1 regular joint - can be bent at 70 degree (or up to 90 degree if the feet is rotated flatly sideway)

Ankle/ Feet: 1 regular joints - can be rotated 360 degree sideway

R-7 Special Gimmick - MP -13 Laserbeak/ MP-16 Buzzsaw Perching onto MP Soundwave:

soundwavempdet10.jpg (247589 bytes)In addition to the articulation, here is a simple gimmick which is equally important, perching.  It is so simple that it can easily be missed or not noticed if it hadn't been for the instruction booklet or internet reviews.  I have to give the designers lots of credits for doing so, simple yet very effective.    MP Laserbeak/ Buzzsaw and MP Soundwave are designed with the tongue and groove connection so perching would be possible.  There are two places which MP Laserbeak/Buzzsaw can perch onto MP Soundwave.  The first one is located at either side of MP Soundwave top shoulder.  Those series of tiny ridges on top of MP Soundwave is for MP Laserbeak/Buzzsaw to perch their feet into.  The second one can be found on either side of MP Soundwave wrist and that's the clear plastic protruded ridge adjacent to the red band.

R-8 MP-16 Rumble in Cassette Mode:

rumblempcassette1.jpg (215773 bytes)To most cartoon fans, the blue tape to us will always be called Rumble despites what was labeled on the toy card/box or the old Marvel comic.  Therefore, this review will go by the FIRRIB/RIBFIR (Rumble is Blue, Frenzy is Red) rule and not the RIRFIB/FIBRIR.  Now that's out the way, let the review begins.  MP Rumble is also a micro cassette and has the same measurement as MP Buzzsaw cassette, that is 1 5/16x 1 15/15 x 5/16 (LxWxD in inch).  He features a silver chrome at the chest, crotch, and knee, silver paint, cyan paint at the main cassette face, and a tampograph Decepticon insignia above his waist.  The light blue and purple color on him are not painted but the actual colored mold.  And just like all MP-13, MP-15, MP-15 cassettes, MP Rumble is all plastic with no die cast metal anywhere.  Of all the 3 MP cassette molds, MP Frenzy/Rumble mold is pretty much similar to its Original/ Reissue predecessor in both mode.  However, one of the biggest improvements in the MP version is the way the head transforms out and that is it eliminates the spring loaded head like the Original/ Reissue which sometime just jam up.  Instead, the entire head flip out from his back followed by a 360 degree rotation to complete the correct orientation.

R-9 MP-16 Rumble in Robot Mode:

rumblemprob1.jpg (255893 bytes)In robot mode, MP Rumble is utterly magnificence, body proportion that is well define, and very balance all around.  He has painted red eyes with a silver face which makes a good contrast against his purple head.  Also, the mouth expression with that grin looks on the Frenzy/Rumble mold really captured the two brothers characteristic nicely.  MP Rumble looks so good it's like he just jumps out from the TV screen.  As for the head, a few transfans thought his head was a little bit big judging from the internet pictures.  Personally, I thought his head is just perfect when you see it in person.  In term of transformation, it is very simple yet very effective at the same time.  This is one of the perfect examples where it doesn't need to have a complicate transformation to maintain that masterpiece criteria.  MP-8 Grimlock was also done the same way as MP Frenzy/ Rumble and all look fantastic.  Surprisingly, MP Rumble actually a lot taller than his Original/ Reissue counterpart despites having the same dimension in cassette mode.

R-10 MP-16 Rumble Articulation Showing Off:

rumblemprob2.jpg (318183 bytes)Image on the left displays some of the move and poses in which MP Rumble is capable of doing.  Here are the full articulations description:

Head: 2 regular joints - head can be rotated 360 degree sideway.  A 2nd joint allows the head to flip 180 backward (part of transformation)

Shoulder: 1 ball joint - shoulder can be rotated 360 degree forward and backward, swing 90 degree outward.

Upper Arm: no movement

Elbow: 1 regular joint - can be bent at a 90 degree.

Wrist: 1 regular joint - can only be bent 90 degree inward due to transformation

Hand/ finger: no joint/ movement

Hip/ Waist: no joint/ movement

Crotch-Leg: 1 ball joint - can be rotated 360 degree sideway, 5 degree swivel all around, swing 90 degree upward, do a full split.

Thigh: no movement (really part of the double pin joint that is part crotch-leg and knee joint)

Knee: 1 pin joint - bent 90 degree backward and 85 degree forward.

Ankle/ Feet: 1 ball joint - can be rotated 360 degree sideway, bent 90 degree upward, 5 degree swivel all around

R-11 MP-16 Rumble Hand Gun/Back Gun:

rumblemprob3.jpg (305695 bytes)Now on to MP Rumble hand gun or back gun depending how you display him.  Unlike the Original/Reissue, the MP version weapon is now more in scale with the robot so it looks much, much better and not out of place like he had borrowed some larger bots for their weapon.  But the biggest improvement of all, the gun was designed to be more cartoon accurate so when MP Rumble holds the gun, the two vertical fins of the gun now pointed upward.  In the Original/Reissue, the two vertical fins were actually used more like a gun handle in which it was clamped onto Rumble hand since he couldn't hold the gun.  Also, MP Rumble gun handle now has 2 posts each with different usage.  The thinner post is to be held by the hand when using as gun mode.  To store the gun on MP Rumble back via the cassette holes, simply  flip the thinner post at a 90 degree and that will reveal a second more wider post.

R-12 MP-16 Rumble Signature Pile-Driver:

rumblemprob5.jpg (263360 bytes)rumblemprob4.jpg (335152 bytes)My oh my, who would've thought the Frenzy/Rumble brothers signature weapon pile-driver could become a reality one day!  We never got one back in the 80s until now, this Masterpiece Line sure delivers big time.  Both the pile drivers are a mirror of each other so make sure you don't get 2 identical one otherwise the 2nd one is useless in term as a pile driver and as a gun storage.  This factory error packaging happened to a couple of tranfans so inspect your pile drivers upon opening from the box for the first time.  To use the pile driver, first position MP Rumble both arm up with the ball joint expose to the front.  Next, bent the elbow at a right angle and then fold the hand portion back into the socket.  Finally, take each pile driver and plug into the arm until it snaps in securely.

R-13 MP-16 Rumble Storing the Pile-Drivers:

rumblemprob6.jpg (341489 bytes)When not in use, the pile drivers in conjunction with the cap, can also be mount at the back of MP Rumble cassette holes and use it as a back pack, jet pack, or whatever your imagination desire.  Should the pile drivers are in use on both arms, the pile driver cap doesn't need to be toss away and into your storage bin.  Instead, it can still be mounted onto MP Rumble back via plugging into the socket of the head.  Now all the pieces are in one place.  This will not not cause any conflict with the guns if it was already store at the back of MP Rumble, right image.

R-14 MP-13 Soundwave w/ MP-15 & MP-16 ( Rumble/Frenzy) Accessory Interaction 1 - Storage & Arm Cannon:

soundwavempdet12.jpg (267639 bytes)MP Rumble/ Frenzy silver hand guns are not incorporated into the transformation and as a result the weapons cannot be stored within the figures like MP Laserbeak, Buzzsaw or Ravage.  Once MP Rumble/ Frenzy are in cassette mode, there are 2 locations in which their weapons can be store into.  If you observe carefully at the rear of MP-13 tape deck mode, you'll find each end has a panel that can be opened up to reveal a teeny tiny space which is big enough to store only 1 hand gun of either MP Rumble or Frenzy for each compartment, left image.  Both weapons can be left it in there and it doesn't affect MP Soundwave transformation.  Of course, in robot mode these compartments now become MP Soundwave feet.  Storing the gun inside those little compartments can be a hassle because you would have to angle the hand gun in a way so that it would fit inside the contained space.  The worst part, you might end up scratching the silver paint of the gun as well MP Soundwave himself.  Of course, not to mention you might have some issues when retrieving it out.  I would not recommend storing MP Rumble/ Frenzy weapons into MP-13 Soundwave compartment.  A 2nd route which is a lot easier and that is to store inside their pile driver compartment, center image.  Last but not least, when the pile drivers are used in conjunction with the pile driver cap, it now has the ability to clip onto MP-13 Soundwave extended elbow to give him that arm cannon look, far lower right hand image.

R-15 MP-13 Soundwave w/ MP-15 & MP-16 ( Rumble/Frenzy) Accessory Interaction 2 - Video Connector or as Battery Charger:

soundwavempdet11.jpg (299949 bytes)Amazingly, MP Rumble/Frenzy pile driver accessory which already had multiple playing values consisted of  the ground breaking pile driver, gun storage, back pack, arm cannon for MP Soundwave, got one more gimmick to offer.  Depending on your personal preference and who you ask, some transfans may say the pile driver and sensor device connection is a video connector that is a knot to the "1986 Transformers The Movie" where Soundwave linked himself to the video monitor so that Megatron and his cons can watch Laserbeak spy finding, far right image.  Other may say it's a battery charger.  Using the pile driver accessory in conjunction with MP-13 Soundwave sensor device accessory, now merge the two pieces to complete a battery charger device/ video connector.  On the right side of MP Soundwave tape deck mode just below the volume dial, there is a port with 2 circular pegs, this is where the battery charger device is connected into Soundwave to keep him fully powered up or feed to the video monitor.

R-16 Original/Reissue and MP Cassettes Compatibility:

soundwavempdet14.jpg (348933 bytes)Will my Original/ Reissue cassettes fit into MP-13 Soundwave or vice versa?  Of course, yes!  In cassette mode, all the Original/ Reissue cassettes and MP cassettes are all identical in size to each other regardless Autobots or Decepticons.  Therefore, if you have anyone of these cassettes, it can be place inside MP Soundwave, Original/ Reissue Soundwave, or Original/ Reissue Blaster tape door compartment with out any issue, see far right image.  For demonstrations, I have placed MP Laserbeak inside of both Original/ Reissue Blaster and Soundwave.  For MP-13 Soundwave, he is shown with Original/ Reissue Eject and Laserbeak inside of him.  Hopefully these images will clarify any doubt of their compatibility.

R-17 MP-16 Rumble & Buzzsaw - Asia Exclusive:

In addition to the Normal/Regular Release, some Masterpiece figures are selected for the rare Amazon Japan Exclusive, or the more common Asia Exclusive release.  The only different with these exclusives in addition to what you get from the Normal Release, it also comes with an add on accessory or coin that are packed in a separate taped or sealed baggy as a token for purchasing from their company, retail, online etc.  Depending on where you shop, some retailers can bundle up the Amazon Japan Exclusive and the Asia Exclusive goodies together.  Also, this may vary among retailers, but some retailers may charge a few more buck for the exclusive version than the normal release because of the small extra gift while other just charge the same as the Normal release.

smokescreenmp16-coin.jpg (157128 bytes)In MP-16 case, he does not have any Amazon Japan Exclusive involved.  Only the Asia Exclusive (right image) was offer so buyers will receive the exclusive metal coin that is wrapped in some sort of design paper.  Again, I know the coin is labeled as Frenzy, but to me as the cartoon fan, he'll always be known as Rumble.

NOTE-3: Images credited to their respective owners, R-17 are not my pictures.

R-18 MP-16 Rumble & Buzzsaw QC Issue:

Here are MP-16 quality control issue that people may experiences:

3 - MP Rumble face has a scar or crack - Not very common but a couple of people did get this.

4 - MP Rumble has minor scratch or missing chrome on his chest/ crotch  - Very few people experience this.

5 - MP Buzzsaw gun booster breaks off - Very few people experience this.

R-19 MP-16 Scale Comparison w/ Image from Takara Tomy Designer Shogo Hasui:

soundwavempscalecomp1.jpg (222137 bytes)Section R-17 images were all mirror from Shogo Hasui twitter who wanted the fans see Takara Tomy latest masterpiece figures in term of their appearance and scale comparison.  So, 1st panel showed MP-13 Soundwave with his 4 main cassette minions.  The next panel is another scale comparison of the minions standing next to the larger bots e.g. MP-10 Prime, MP-11 Starscream, MP-12 Sideswipe, and MP-13 Soundwave.
